my six degrees of separation

Have you ever googled yourself? This question has revisited my life for years, but never quite presented it's importance until my Interior Design Internship Professor, Lynn Smith, brought it up in class in Spring of 2010. She read from an article the importance of managing your own public-relations, no matter what profession you are pursuing.

Being an Interior Design student at Fullerton College, CA studying everything from Color Theory to Auto CAD, getting my name out there was the last thing on my mind. Up until this point my main focus was to keep up my GPA and work two jobs to support myself. Nearing my graduation, a new focus has joined the group. Throughout my studies at Fullerton College, my professors have always stressed the power of, "Network, Network, Network!" And of course, my starting point to doing this was joining associations such as American Society of Interior Designers and NEWH The Hospitality Industry Network. But, working seven days a week didn't allow me to attend the associations' events. This changed when I quit a job, moved back home and took an Internship Job.

Lynn Smith's Internship course sparked the idea to start my blog. The article she read in class stated that 90% of employers Google their interviewees either before or after the interview takes place! That percentage shocked me and the haunting question came back. Yes I have Googled myself! And despite Googles ability to link everyones name even remotely similar to my own, nothing pops up! There is a struggle, especially in today's digital nation, to stand out from other "resumes in the pile." So, naturally, I started my own blog!

For some, blogging is their public diary. For others, it could be their medium to post ongoing chronicles of information. For me it's my human web, my six degrees of separation.
